About
Cannibal Corpse is an American death metal group from Buffalo, New York, founded in 1988 and currently based out of Tampa, Florida. There have been sixteen studio albums, two box sets, four video albums, and two live albums released by the band. Throughout their career, they have not received much attention through radio or TV mediums; however, due to their early album releases, such as “Butchered at Birth” and “Tomb of the Mutilated,” a cult following developed for the group. As of 2015, Cannibal Corpse sold two million units globally across all of their album collections.
Violence Unimagined (2021), which is the band’s fifteenth studio album, brought them their best “first week” sales ever and their first top ten on the Billboard Top Album Sales Chart, where they debuted at No. 6 with 14,000 albums sold. Several members have left Cannibal Corpse since its formation. The band still retains its original members, which include drummer Paul Mazurkiewicz and bassist Alex Webster. The remaining members of Cannibal Corpse are George Fisher (vocals), Rob Barrett (guitar), and Erik Rutan (guitar).
Formation and self-titled demo
The formation of Cannibal Corpse dates back to December 1988 when musicians who were earlier members of local death metal groups, Beyond Death (Alex Webster and Jack Owen), and Tirant Sin (Paul Mazurkiewicz, Chris Barnes, and Bob Rusay), joined hands to create some music. Mazurkiewicz, Barnes, and Rusay were all acquaintances from their school days, and had first met Webster and Owen while enjoying music at various local venues. According to Webster, “there were only a few other bands around that could actually be called death metal.”
Eaten Back to Life and Butchered at Birth
Their first album Eaten Back to Life came out in August 1990. The band performed in a number of shows across the region to promote the album. Driven by the desire to exploit the commercial possibilities presented by the rising death metal scene in Florida, the band decided to relocate to Tampa. Their second album Butchered at Birth came out on July 1, 1991. Webster explained the events as follows: “We went to Europe in ’91 with Butchered at Birth and there was such a great reaction from these fans over there on the other side of the ocean, thinking that all these people knew us! We had crowds of around two or three hundred people coming out to see us each night, despite the fact that we had just made our second record. It was a real shock!” The band members stopped their regular jobs and left college
Musical style and influences
The music genre of Cannibal Corpse is based on brutal technical death metal featuring incredibly fast tempo, complicated guitar riffs, blast beat drums, and guttural vocalizing. The musical performance of the band is brutal yet technically impeccable, making a very heavy music atmosphere. The lyrical content of the band consists of violent, horrific, and fictional themes corresponding to the brutal music style of the band. In addition to the above mentioned, the influence of death metal bands like Death, Morbid Angel, Slayer, and thrash metal bands like Slayer and Kreator made an influence on the band. All this made it possible for the band to become one of the representatives of extreme metal.
Instrumentation and vocals
Cannibal Corpse utilizes an instrumental approach based on the use of heavy distortion as well as guitar downtuning for playing complicated riffs, while the bass guitar complements the guitar sound. Moreover, the rhythmic pattern includes frequent utilization of blast beats and double bass techniques accompanied by complex fill-ins performed on the drums. As for the vocal aspect of Cannibal Corpse’s musical approach, deep growls and harsh scream vocals are used in combination with high volume. This type of singing should not stand out against the overall instrumentation but be integrated into the whole sound.
Cultural impact and legacy
Alex Distefano of OC Weekly referred to Cannibal Corpse as being “undisputedly the kings of death metal.” The Forbes website stated that Cannibal Corpse were “largely considered the face of death metal genre,” and “one of the world’s most notorious and respected metal acts.” The band is also regarded as “one of the most brutal metal groups in music history.” The online platform Music Radar featured the band on their list of “The Scariest Artists/Bands Around.” In 2023, the audience for Revolver magazine named Cannibal Corpse the “brutal band of all time.”Cannibal Corpse has been rated by some publications as one of the best heavy metal bands ever. The employees of Loudwire commented in 2016 that: “As far as death metal is concerned, there is perhaps no band as consistently excellent as Cannibal Corpse.” Jordan Blum from Loudwire included Cannibal Corpse into the ranks of “Big Four” death metal bands including Death, Morbid Angel, and The Black Dahlia Murder saying that they were perhaps “the most memed band in the [genre].” Memes about the large neck of George Fisher (vocalist of the band) gained popularity due to the emergence.
